Seal Encounter

We went on our normal walk to the beach at Torcross today after a snack and a drink in The Billy Can of course, and as we often do, we saw a seal, just a shadow in the water, some way off.

As he was hanging around and bobbing his head out of the water we went to have a closer look.

He was watching us too so I went a bit closer to get a better photo, presuming he would swim off at any moment. But the closer I got the closer in to the beach he came.

So I got closer and he got closer.

....until he was clean out of the water, as if he wanted me to go up and stroke him like a puppy, and it was really tempting.

But I kept a reasonable distance and just snapped away as he posed, and eventually to my surprise, on a very empty beach, we drew quite a crowd.

Everyone was silent and kept a respectful distance, it was a magical moment.

That was a great sight. We get plenty here off the south and west coasts but too often they are in the distance and photos are hard to come by unless you have a long lens. You were very lucky!

🧡🧡🧡🧡 How lucky you are/were. Such a cutie. I would have snapped a way as well. How long did he hang around for?

I stayed a good 3 or 4 minutes but quite a crowd had gathered so we wandered off. He was in no hurry to go, and no fear at all. I think probably nobody having a dog helped because quite a few dog walkers use that beach.

What a magical moment! I too have had special moments with wild creatures with my camera. Those moments are priceless. To have a seal approach on its own is just an amazing thing to have happen. Great shots!!

Wonderful - it's amazing what can happen when you just remain calm around wild creatures. They are as interested in you as you are in them. I had the same thing happen with a Cooper's hawk at my favorite park - she just sat there while I snapped away from 15 feet and, as people came up, I held out my hand to slow them down and they stood and watched her watch us. Magical! Good for you for allowing that to happen for others.
