Torcross Summer, The Wall

In September works start at Torcross to repair and strengthen the sea wall. This post is the first in a series taken on what I am calling the last day of summer. It struck me that this idyllic summer sunny seaside scene will soon be interrupted by machinery and boulders, lots of boulders. I will be photographing that too, but I wanted to make a series of photos taken during a couple of hours on a Sunday morning before the holiday ends, during this summer of all summers, which most of us will remember fondly for a long time.

This first batch are about the wall itself, and later photos will be the people and activities on and around the wall.

If you got this far, I am ending the post on this small device attached to the wall. It has been placed here by The Plymouth Coastal Observatory with a request that as many people as possible take photos with their phone slotted in right here. You can then share the photos on their website as a valuable record of the state of the beach. This will aid in research into erosion and recovery cycles.

To emphasise the point I took a photo on the day and another just two days later. The contrast is marked. Part two of the series will be about the people and how they use the wall and the beach at Torcross.
